Workshop Design
with The LSP Coach
You know you need to bring people together. Perhaps there’s a strategy to shape, a challenge to solve, a change to navigate, a training need to address or a conversation that needs to happen.
But knowing you need a workshop is one thing. Knowing what should happen in the room is another.
That’s where I can help. I work with you to turn the challenge into a purposeful experience, bringing together the right questions, activities and approaches to help your people explore, connect and move towards an outcome.
A great workshop or training session is more than a collection of activities. It’s a carefully designed experience that helps people think, connect and move towards a meaningful outcome.
Don’t start with the activities.
Start with the outcomes.
It’s tempting to start designing a workshop by looking for an activity.
It might be a game you’ve seen work brilliantly at another event. A LEGO® exercise that looked engaging. A retrospective format someone recommended. A conversation framework, a canvas, a simulation or a team-building exercise you found online.
Perhaps you’ve been asked to run a workshop and don’t want people sitting around a table listening to slides. Maybe you want to get people talking, encourage participation, inject some energy into the room or make the session memorable.
So you start searching. What’s a good activity for a strategy workshop? What LEGO® exercise could we use? What’s a fun way to get people talking about change?
Before long, you have a collection of interesting activities. This is where the trap can begin. You can end up with a workshop full of activities without a clear reason for any of them to be there.
The session might be energetic. People might enjoy themselves. You might even get some great conversations. But did it actually achieve what you needed it to achieve?
That’s why I believe workshop design should start somewhere else.
Instead of asking, ‘What activity should we use?‘, we should be asking, ‘What outcomes do we want to achieve?‘. What should participants understand, think, feel, decide or do differently by the time they leave the room?
From outcomes to experience
Once you know where you want to get to, the next step is to work backwards. What needs to happen during the session to help participants achieve the desired outcomes?
Perhaps they need to understand the current situation before they can explore the future. Maybe they need to hear different perspectives before they can reach a shared view. They might need time to reflect, space to generate ideas, an opportunity to challenge assumptions or a way to make something complex more tangible.
This is where I can help.
I can help turn your desired outcomes into a purposeful journey, considering the people in the room, the time available, the context you’re working in and the experience you want participants to have.
Together, we can explore the right mix of questions, conversations, activities, tools and techniques to create that journey.
Sometimes that might include LEGO® Serious Play®. Sometimes another approach will be more appropriate. And sometimes the best choice is to keep things wonderfully simple.
What can I help you design?
Not every session starts in the same place. You might have a clear outcome but no idea how to get there, an existing workshop that needs refreshing, or a training programme that needs bringing to life.
I can help you design experiences that are purposeful, engaging and right for the people in the room
Workshops
From strategy and team sessions to innovation, change and problem-solving, I’ll help you shape the right experience around your desired outcomes.
Training
Turn knowledge into an experience that helps people understand, practise and apply new skills, whether you’re creating a one-off session or a wider learning programme.
Existing Sessions
Have a workshop or training session that isn’t quite working? We can step back, understand what’s missing and redesign it with a clearer purpose.
Whatever you’re designing, the starting point is the same. Understand what you want to achieve, then create the experience that will help you get there.
And if LEGO® Serious Play® is the right fit, I can bring that into the design too.
From design to delivery
A great design deserves great facilitation.
I can step into the room as your facilitator, bringing the experience to life and creating the space for people to participate, explore and make meaningful connections.
Or, if you want to be part of the delivery, we can co-facilitate together. I can also design the session for you to run yourself, with the structure, activities and guidance you need to make it work.
The important thing is that the experience works for your people, your context and your outcomes.
Got an idea? Let’s shape it.
You don’t need to have the workshop worked out. Bring the challenge, the audience and what you’d like to achieve, and I’ll help you turn it into a purposeful experience.
