The open-source guide: A starting point, not the destination
Since 2010, the LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) method has been open-sourced. The guide is freely available, offering you the ‘building blocks’ to design and deliver your own LSP workshops. It is an invaluable resource but, even the LEGO® Group ‘strongly recommend’ that facilitators undertake training. Why? Because a ‘guide‘, however detailed, is not the same as ‘mastery’.
A story from the garage
When I bought my first car, I knew very little about engines. To help me, I invested in a Haynes Manual. For anyone of a certain age, you’ll remember these step-by-step guides, complete with diagrams, difficulty ratings, and detailed instructions. They covered everything from changing a headlight bulb to replacing a radiator, brake pads, or even an entire engine.
With that manual (and the occasional helping hand from my Dad), I managed to complete all sorts of jobs on my cars. The manual gave me confidence, clarity, and a process to follow.

But here’s the truth. Owning a Haynes Manual didn’t make me a mechanic. I could perform tasks, but I lacked the experience, professional insight, and judgment of someone trained in the trade.
Why certification matters
For you as a facilitator
The open-source guide to LEGO® Serious Play® is like a Haynes Manual. If you’re already an experienced facilitator, you may be able to pick it up, experiment, and deliver sessions successfully.
But being a certified facilitator takes you beyond simply following instructions. Certification provides:
- Credibility – Clients, teams, and organisations know you’ve achieved a recognised standard of learning.
- Depth of Understanding – You learn not just the ‘how‘ but the ‘why‘ behind the method, and how to adapt it to different contexts.
- Confidence in Facilitation – Training equips you to handle challenges in the room, navigate group dynamics, and unlock deeper insights.
- A Professional Network – Certification connects you with a global community of facilitators who share tools, ideas, and support.
- Continuous Development – Training provides a foundation you can build on, allowing you to stretch the method far beyond the manual.
For your clients
For participants, a LEGO® Serious Play® session can feel like play, but the outcomes are serious. Organisations invest time, money, and trust in these workshops, and they want assurance that the facilitator is trained to deliver real results.
Certification tells your clients:
- You’re not experimenting at their expense.
- You’ve been trained to handle complex situations, from conflict to creative blocks.
- You can design sessions that align with their goals, not just ‘build for fun‘, but ‘build for insight‘.
In short, certification reassures them that they’re in safe, skilled hands.
Common Objections (and Why They Miss the Point)
Whenever I talk about certification, I hear a few familiar questions:
‘Why should I pay for training when the guide is free?‘
The open-source guide is a brilliant foundation. But it’s just that, a foundation. Certification takes you further, helping you understand why the method works, how to adapt it responsibly, and how to deliver sessions that go beyond ‘fun‘ into meaningful, lasting impact.
‘I’m already a skilled facilitator. Do I really need certification?‘
Strong facilitation skills certainly help, but LEGO® Serious Play® has its own unique structure, principles, and pitfalls. Certification ensures you know how to apply the method with integrity, while giving you a global community of fellow practitioners to learn from. Even experienced facilitators often say the training completely shifted how they approach group work.
‘Isn’t this just playing with LEGO?‘
At first glance, yes, it looks like play. But the outcomes are serious. Certified facilitators are trained to guide participants from playful building to deep reflection and insight. Without that training, workshops risk staying on the surface, entertaining but not transformational.
The power of play
Certification isn’t just about having a piece of paper to hang on your wall, and it isn’t about following the rules more closely, It’s about demonstrating to others, and to yourself, that you’ve invested in developing your skills to a professional level, unlocking the freedom to adapt the rules, to innovate responsibly, and to deliver workshops that truly change the way people think, collaborate, and solve problems.
Much like a mechanic with years of training and practice can go far beyond what I ever managed with my Haynes Manual, a certified LEGO® Serious Play® facilitator has the ability to create fun, engaging, and memorable workshops, sessions that spark creativity, inspire collaboration, and leave participants talking about the experience long after it’s over.
If you’re serious about using LEGO® Serious Play® to create workshops that are fun, engaging, and genuinely memorable, certification is the best way to accelerate your journey.
Training will give you the skills, confidence, and credibility to design and deliver workshops that people love, remember, and talk about long after they leave the room. It also gives your clients peace of mind that they’re in the hands of a trusted professional who can balance creativity with meaningful outcomes.
